Services offered
Our services are available to academic, research and certain spin-off
activity at the University of Southampton. Our most commonly used
services include:
- Web hosting: we can host web sites under one or more
domain names, using Unix or Windows based platforms.
We can provide support
for features such as PHP or MS Front Page Extensions.
We can register domain names for you, and can
host database applications such as SQL, Access and MySQL.
We offer access to web site activity statistics using either
the Awstats or Webtrends packages; this can be particularly useful
to understand your visitor base and to assist in search engine
optimisation work. Where requested, we can offer advice on
search engine placement and sponsored search engine listings.
- Email hosting: any web hosting service will come with
two free POP email accounts. We also offer POP accounts
seperately. All email passing through our servers is scanned
for viruses (using Sophos) and any detected junk email (spam) is
marked as such (but not deleted).
- Black box hosting: if you prefer to deploy your own
server, we can do that, subject to certain conditions.
You may then run your own choice of operating system and applications.
We can also buy systems for you, install them and then hand over
access to you.
- Specialised consultancy: we offer consultancy in a
wide range of areas, which includes taking research done in the
highly-regarded School of Electronics and Computer Science at
our University premises into the marketplace. We can offer advice
in new emerging areas, such as IPv6 consultancy.
